From 2026, the Digital Master Test (dMAT) is being introduced as an additional part of the APS documentation process for selected Master’s applicants from India.
This change is particularly important for students planning to study in Germany from the Summer Semester 2027 or later, especially those with previous degrees in Engineering, Commerce, Finance, Economics, Business or Management.
But what exactly is the dMAT exam? Is it compulsory for every Indian student? How is it connected with APS? And what happens if you receive a low dMAT score?

What is the dMAT Exam?
dMAT stands for Digital Master Test.
It is a standardized academic aptitude test designed for applicants seeking admission to Master’s-level programmes.
For selected Indian graduates, dMAT is being introduced as an additional element of the APS documentation and verification process.
The test is administered by g.a.s.t. (Society for Academic Study Preparation and Test Development), not by APS India.
This distinction is important.
g.a.s.t. handles the dMAT, including registration, test administration, test centre booking and certificates.
APS India continues to handle APS document verification, including checking the authenticity and formal plausibility of your academic documents.
In other words, dMAT does not replace APS. It becomes an additional requirement for certain applicants.
Why Has the dMAT Been Introduced?
The dMAT is a standardized academic aptitude assessment.
Instead of focusing only on documents or previously earned grades, the test assesses skills relevant to academic study and problem-solving.
For Indian applicants covered by the new requirement, the dMAT becomes an additional part of their APS documentation.
The introduction is being carried out step by step rather than applying immediately to every Master’s applicant from India.

Who Needs to Take the dMAT Exam in 2026?
Not every Indian student applying to Germany needs to take dMAT.
The requirement currently applies to selected Master’s applicants whose previous degree falls within an affected field.
Broadly, you may need the dMAT if:
- Your previous degree falls within one of the affected study fields.
- You are applying for a Master’s programme in Germany.
- Your application relates to the Summer Semester 2027 intake or a later Master’s intake.
- You do not qualify for one of the transitional exemptions.
The currently affected broad fields include:
Engineering
Commerce / Accounting / Finance / Economics
Business / Management
Students should not assume eligibility purely based on a general course name. If your degree is interdisciplinary, specialized or closely related to one of these categories, check the official affected-fields list published by APS India.
Who Is Exempt from the dMAT Requirement?
This is one of the most important sections for students who had already started their APS process before the new rule was introduced.
If you completed your APS online registration before 29 June 2026, you are exempt from the dMAT requirement under the transitional rule for that APS procedure.
If you shipped your complete APS application documents before 29 June 2026, you are also exempt for that APS procedure.
This can apply even if your APS verification is still being processed.
Keep your courier or shipment proof available in case it is requested.
If you already completed the APS procedure and received your APS certificate, you do not need to take dMAT for that completed APS procedure.
However, if you submit a new APS application later, the rules applicable at the time of the new application may apply.
The introduction of the dMAT requirement is intended for applications connected with the Summer Semester 2027 Master’s intake and subsequent intakes.
Therefore, students applying for the Winter Semester 2026/27 should carefully check the applicable APS guidance rather than assuming the Summer 2027 rule applies to them.
Which Courses and Fields Are Affected by dMAT?
At the introductory stage, APS India has identified three broad categories.
1. Engineering
Students whose previous degree is classified within an affected Engineering field may fall under the new dMAT requirement.
Because Engineering includes a large number of branches and specializations, students should check their exact qualification against the official APS affected-fields list.
2. Commerce, Accounting, Finance and Economics
This category includes qualifications related to areas such as:
- Commerce
- Accounting
- Finance
- Economics
- International Finance
- Corporate Finance
- Financial Economics
- Economics and Finance
- Investment Management
- Taxation
- Business Economics
The exact classification matters, especially for degrees with unusual titles or interdisciplinary combinations.
3. Business and Management
Applicants from Business Administration, Business Management, Management Studies and related fields may also be affected.
Again, the safest approach is to check the exact title, major and specialization of your previous qualification against the official list rather than relying only on the broad categories above.
dMAT Exam Pattern: What Should Students Expect?
The dMAT is a digital examination conducted at authorized test centres.
For the broader dMAT system, the assessment consists of two components:
Core Module
The core module assesses general study aptitude through three subtests covering cognitive abilities.
It focuses on the type of analytical thinking and reasoning skills relevant to academic study.
Subject Module
The second component assesses the ability to apply knowledge and analytical skills to academic problems.
For the APS verification process in India, affected applicants take the General Academic Module.
Instead, students are expected to understand a problem, interpret information and apply their skills to arrive at an appropriate answer.
The overall dMAT examination framework has a duration of approximately three and a half hours, including a break between the modules.
Students should use the official preparation materials and sample tasks provided by dMAT before appearing for the examination.
